Bulletin #12: AI Advertising Governance: Stay Informed
The Governance of AI Advertising Has Begun
IAE and IEEE Standards Association Launch New Industry Connections Group on Trusted Advertising in the Age of AI
"Artificial intelligence is transforming advertising from a communications profession into a global behavioral infrastructure shaping what people see, trust, and buy"
For much of the last decade, conversations about artificial intelligence in advertising have
focused on capability.
Increasingly, the conversation is shifting toward governance.
As AI systems become more influential in shaping what people see, trust, and buy, questions of accountability, transparency, human oversight, and public trust are becoming harder to ignore.
The challenge is no longer simply how to deploy these systems, but how to govern them
responsibly.
Against that backdrop, an important development occurred on April 8.
The IEEE Entity Collaborative Activities Governance Board formally approved the new IAE–IEEE Standards Association Industry Connections Group focused on
Trusted Advertising in the Age of AI.
As background, IEEE is the world largest technical professional organization, with more than 485,000 engineers across 190 countries. Its Standards Association is responsible for globally adopted standards including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth. We believe this collaboration represents an encouraging signal that serious cross-disciplinary work spanning technology, governance, standards, law, advertising, and public policy is increasingly being recognized as relevant to the future governance of AI-mediated systems.
As many of you may recall, on April 22, the IAE convened Summit I: The Intention Advantage in collaboration with the IEEE Standards Association as our knowledge partner. The session brought together leaders from technology, law, brands, agencies, standards-setting bodies, government, academia, consumer advocacy, and capital markets around a central concern: while AI is rapidly transforming advertising, governance frameworks for accountability, transparency, and public trust remain underdeveloped.
Participants included leaders from organizations such as Mastercard, Accenture, Prudential, the IAB, the Alliance for Audited Media, venture and institutional capital, law, academia, behavioral science, and standards-setting bodies.
The Summit Series was created to help convene practical cross-disciplinary leadership around that challenge and to begin building operational trust infrastructure, the "Trust Stack,” for the advertising industry.
The April convening has already led to the formal launch of the IEEE SA Industry Connections Group on Human-Empowered Advertising in AI. The effort is now moving from convening into active working sessions focused on accountability, human oversight, governance architecture, and measurable trust mechanisms for AI-enabled advertising systems.
